Favorite Money Saving Subscription Boxes

Saturday, February 27, 2016

There are lots of choices for subscription boxes today.  There is one for every budget and every hobby these days.  After 2 years of subscribing to boxes the following are my favorites based on value:

1. PopSugar:

BoxPopsugar Must Have

Price: $39.95/month

What is it: a female lifestyle monthly subscription box curated by Lisa Sugar, founder of a lifestyle blog Popsugar that features celebrity news, shopping, beauty, fitness, entertainment, food, children, home and pets.

Best for: females ages 18-40.

Pros: good value, fun items, often filled with stuff you want but probably wouldn't buy due to price.

Cons: you may get a lot of stuff you don't want.

Overall: Frequently the boxes will include items ranging from $100 t0 $180.  A lot of time it will float around $120.  In another word, since you are paying for stuff without know what is inside them and they are beginning shipped to you directly from the warehouse you get to pay wholesale price.   I still like it because it is still a treat every month.

2. Box of Style

Price: $100 - shipped every quarter.

What is it: curated fashion items by Rachel Zoe that promises a retail value of $300.

Best for: stylish ladies, especially those that love Rachel Zoe's fashion sense.

Pros: Great value, the boxes has over $300 in retail value.  Curated by Rachel Zoe and so far she has hit the last 4 boxes right on the nail.  I am constantly impressed on how Rachel knows what I need every season.

Cons: It is expensive to spend $100 without knowing what you are even getting

Overall: I often wonder when I use her items, especially handbags, if I will see others with it because then I will know exactly where it came from. Plus, I don't want to have something "everyone else" has.  So far it has not happened yet which makes this box valuable.

3. Fabletic

BoxFabletics

What is it: monthly subscription of yoga and/or workout clothing.  They recently introduced men's clothing as well, and you can mix and match every month

Cost: $49.95/month

Best for: active individual who loves fresh outfits for the gym or the yoga studio.

Pros: You can get an entire outfit for $49 (often $25 on your first outfit). Quality is decent for the money and you get to pick the outfit that you want.

Cons: Even if you skip a month, you will be charged the $49 monthly fee that you can use as a future credit.

Overall: To me this forces me to buy a new outfit every month, which is not necessary a bad thing. Do I really need 12 new outfits every year? Plus I know I am still going to by some nikes, lululemon and athleta gear in addition...hmmm.... Would I otherwise spend $600+/year on athletic clothing?
