Walmart v Target Beauty Box

Sunday, December 28, 2014

Walmart ships a box every season (4 a year), at a cost of $5 shipping. In another words, the box is free, just pay shipping.  The Fall Walmart beauty box shipped in September had items totaling a value of approximately $20.

Items of the last box includes:
  • Neutrogena Nourishing Long Wear Makeup samples
  • Nicki Minaj Pink Friday Fragrance sample
  • CoverGirl Glowing Nights Glosstinis in #LaserLight Nailpolish (Full Size)
  • L'Oreal Color Riche Glossy Balm in Ginger Candy (Full Size)
  • L'Oreal Youth Code Pore Vanisher serum sample
  • Dove Pure Care Dry Oil Restorative Hair deluxe sample
  • Dove Oxygen Moisture Shampoo for Fine Flat Hair deluxe sample
  • Dove Oxygen Moisture Conditioner for Fine Flat Hair deluxe sample
  • Secret Clinical Strength Clear Gel Deodorant full size
My favorite item in the last box is the Dove Pure Care Dry Oil Restorative Hair ($11.98 for full size). I have been using the Aveda Dry Remedy Oil ($27) and it would be great to find a drug store alternative.

Target beauty box, $7 (shipping is included) includes over $28 worth of items.  The last box included:
  • Elnett Extra Strong Hold Hairspray (2.2 oz)
  • Fekkai Professional Blowout Hair Refresher Dry Shampoo (1.70z)
  • Laneige BB Cushion Sample
  • NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil (full size)
  • L'Oreal Color Riche Extraordinaire Lipstick
  • Target Coupon for $3 off beauty purchase of $15 or more.

Target also offered a beauty box for her ($10), a beauty box for him ($5) and a all natural beauty box ($5) special for the holidays.  Target boxes are one time purchases and does not put you into a subscription program. They sell out quickly and to keep receiving the boxes you will have to keep going back and order them when they become available.

Subscriptions boxes for runners

Saturday, December 27, 2014

With all the Holiday eating, it is almost time to get back into shape.  To help us get a head start, here are so subscription boxes for the runner inside you (they do say running help melt pounds away).

1. StrideBox:  a $15 monthly subscription for runners that contains 6-8 performance samples.

This subscription box is okay for me.  While it is nice to get performance related food samples, I do see the samples for free at races that I run, and generally during the same time frame. Thus, for those that do run a lot of races, this may not be the best box for trying "NEW" samples because you will likely get the same ones at races.

2. Runner Box: is a $20/month subscription, +$7 shipping,  of runner tested and runner approved nutritional snacks, personal care products and other running accessories.

3. Dean Karnazes Quarterly Box: a $99/box quarterly subscription with items curated by ultramarathoner and endurance athlete Dean Karnazes.

This is one of my favorite runner's subscription because in addition to samples, it includes items that I generally find that i do need going on my runs.  While I am not a crazy ultramarathon endurance athlete, I still find some of the items useful.   This box also cost more, which is the downside.

There are some other trial mix subscriptions out there that runners may find useful to have but are not curated specifically for runners. The boxes mentioned above are curated for runners.   Which is your favorite?

PopSugar MUST HAVE December Review

Friday, December 26, 2014

This review is a little late, but better late than never - and it is still December! Popsugar MUST HAVE is a $39/month women's lifestyle subscription box (shipping is included).  This is one of my favorite lifestyle boxes - the price is not too expensive, but enough to justify being nice to yourself every month, and the value of the box is great.

Each month's item comes with a note on the items, and the inspiration behind the items.

William Sonoma Cupcake Mix in Vanilla. $15.  I love William Sonoma, so I am excited to try this mix.

Knot & Bow parcel tags $4 - per for the holidays and gift season.  I like how they include items from smaller boutiques like this one where you can still discover them on etsy.

Canvas Home Duaville Bowl in Platinum.  $23. This bowl comes in 3 sizes, and this is the small one. Perfect for a jewelry holder or to serve holiday candies in.  I now want the x-large one.

Subtle Luxury Speckled Metallic Scarf in Light Gray.  $62. This is a very lightweight scarf.  It reminds me more of a summer scarf than a winter scarf.   However, it is perfect for places like California and the few that lives in warm weather.  The sparkle is perfect for the holidays.

Sparkle Pop Jewelry Sydney Pendant Necklace.  $42. This is a long necklace that falls around the stomach.  It is neutral enough to style it with different pieces or change the chain and make it a shorter necklace.  This item is also specially made for PopSugar.  I don't really like jewelry specially made for subscription boxes, though some people like them because it is more unique.

Missing item -  Smashbox Be Legendary Long Wear Lip Lacquer in Bordeaux - $24. I will need to write Popsugar and let the know that this item is missing.  That is why it is always great to read the card of included items carefully!

Overall, I think Popsugar did a great job once again capturing the spirit of the holidays with a total retail value of $170 in this box.  I had used a 50% off coupon and only paid around $22 for this box - I would have to say I scored big here!

Swaggbox first box $5 offer

Tuesday, December 23, 2014

Swaagbox, aka TomBoxes, a $16/month, time of the month subscription box, is offering their first box for only $5 through this link.  This subscription includes tampons, pads, makeup and jewelry in the subscription.

This is a really great offer at $5, I am very tempted although I do love my HelloFlo boxes, and it maybe hard to break away from it.

Want to see other time of the month subscriptions out there? Check out my HelloFlo and BiziBubble reviews.

Junior Explorer Subscription 61% off

Lego Subscription 51% off

The current offers on Groupon are:
  • $35 ($70 value) for a 2 month Designer Subscription ($200 shipment size every 2 months)
  • $49 ($100 value) for a 2 month Master Builder Subscription ($400 shipment size every 2 months)
They will send you a catalog with a large selection of sets you can rent, or see it on line, then play then them, and return them.  They will medically clean the pieces on return.  I heard even if you loose a few pieces, they will not charge you.

This is such a great way to get expensive Legos for kids, and keep getting them new ones! We all know how kids get sick and tired of new toys so quickly.

HelloFlo December Subscription box review

Friday, December 19, 2014

HelloFlo is a time of the month subscription box for $20/month, customized based on light, medium or heavy flow.  Then you get to pick if you want tampons or pads only or a mix of tampons and pads.  Not all subscribers receive their shipment at the same time, instead, it is timed to arrive at least 5 days before your period.  Here is the unboxing experience:

This month's treat is the popbar hot chocolate on a stick.  Retail value = $2.99.  They come in packs of 3, 6 or 12 from popbar.   It comes in dark chocolate, milk chocolate or vanilla chocolate. I got milk chocolate in my package, I wish I got either dark chocolate instead.

The explanation of the treat on their monthly postcard:

The other bonus item is the HelloFlo pouch. They also sell it on amazon with the fabric basket for $14.95.

And the monthly supplies:

So far this is my favorite time of the month subscription.  I also love how easy it is to pause or change the subscription preference directly on their site.

Something about getting a package in the mail & a treat every month that makes this blah time that much more exciting - at least for a subscription junkie like me.  Check out more HelloFlo review here.

Wantable Accessories, a $36 monthly subscription of 4 accessories, is 25% off for a until 12-19-2014 at 4pm CST. Wantable is special because all monthly boxes are different base on the preferences you set upon signing up and you can tell them i.e. if you never want to receive bracelets.

Wednesday, December 17, 2014

Wil Wheaton, creator and producer of Tabletop, an web series that invites TV and celebrities to play different broad games every episode, is the newest quarterly curator.  His subscription box is priced at $100/box.  I can imagine his boxes to be filled with really special items that game lovers are dying to get their hands on - such as the "bullshit" (real poo) from Fight Against Humanities that sold out within 2 hours.

Check out the one of his episode below:

Square Hue Nail Color History Collection

Monday, December 15, 2014

SquareHue is a nail polish subscription for $14.99/month for 3 colors.  Starting January 2015, the nail colors will be inspired by the history of nail polish itself.  I am particularly interested to see how they recreate the history, and telling the story through newly created colors.

Check out my SquareHue review here.

Subscription gifts for Yoga Lovers

Sunday, December 14, 2014

The best thing about subscription boxes these days is how specific they are.  There is almost one for every single one of our favorite hobbies, giving it that extra personal touch than a regular life style subscription.

If you have any yoga lovers on your holiday list - here are three subscriptions that they will love.

1. Yogi Surprise: $45/monthly subscription (shipping included), that includes 6-8 full size yoga inspired products to help your live a cleaner lifestyle.  All products are GMO free and vegetarian.

Get 20% off every box for life with code GRATITUDE.  $10 off your membership for joining their email list. Combine both coupons and your first box = $26.

Check out sample items in their boxes above.

2. Buddhi Box: a $30.95/monthly subscription that aims to enhance your yoga practice & life style.  The monthly subscription includes 4-6 full size products.  Alternatively, there is a sample subscription for $11.95/month that includes 2-3 samples and coupons.   The price of the subscription decreases to $27.95 with a 6 month prepay or $25.95 with a one year prepay.

Each month, Buddhi Box features a charity to donate portion of the proceeds.  It does not specify how much it donates.  The great thing is that if you have a charity you think they should work with, you can contact them and let them know.

Another great thing about Buddhi Box is the personalized process.  With your subscription, they ask you question such as "What type of yoga do you practice?" and more.  I find this important because I have different needs when I do different types of practices.  For example, currently I am into hot yoga, and I am buying certain products that I never bought before when I practiced different forms of yoga.  They only have one box out as of today, it would be really interesting to see if they cater the box base on these preferences.

Here is a look at their first box.

3. Yogi Bliss: is a $49.95/month subscription box with 3-5 products curated to "calm your mind, balance your body and soothe your soul."  Each month there is a theme to the curation. For example, in November 2014, it was HOLIDAY JOY - a box that "will help you or a loved one spread the holiday joy!"

The difference with this box is that they provide a few spoilers right on their site, telling you each month that items include for example, "Handcrafted yoga holiday ornament, Ahimsa Incense and more"

Graze 50% off

Saturday, December 13, 2014

Graze, a bi-weekly $6.99 snack box that comes with 4 snacks each shipment is available on Groupon for 50% off.  The deal is 4 boxes for $14.  Groupon is currently offering an additional 20% off, with the code GIFT20.  This will bring your total to $11.20, or approximately 60% off.

Once you purchase on Groupon, Groupon will send you a code to place your order directly on Graze.  You will get to pick which box you like, the nibble box or the calorie calorie counter box.

I picked up a subscription as a present for that very hard to shop for male in my life who at one point mentioned the Graze box.  I can't wait to give it to him.
